      While cobblestone streets and historic landmarks reflect Philadelphia’s history as the "cradle of liberty," today’s Philadelphia is an major American city with unique activities, cultural events, architecture, shopping, and local cuisine. Philadelphia's compact downtown is friendly to pedestrians.

      Things to See & Do:

      • See the crack in the Liberty Bell and visit Independence Hall at Independence National Historic Park, just a stroll from the downtown area.
      • National Constitution Center: "America’s most interactive history museum" is dedicated to the proposition that the story of the Constitution must be told. Only two blocks from the Liberty Bell.
      • Betsy Ross House, also near Independence Hall, gives you a view into the life the woman who made the first U.S. flag. Meet Betsy herself, and enjoy the Joke & Dagger show in the courtyard, as well as storytellers and colonial craftspersons.
      • Franklin Institute Science Museum promotes science and technology education with interactive exhibits, planetarium, IMAX theater, and other programs.
      • Philadelphia Museum of Art, one of the largest of its kind in the nation, presents its own prestigious collections along side special exhibitions and intriguing programs.
      • The "Hipstoric" Old City District is a unique collection of historical streets, interesting stores, great night life, and plenty of entertainment..
      • Get a taste of authentic 18th century cuisine at City Tavern, where John Adams and Paul Revere, as well as lesser known folks, met for more than just a drink. Taverns functioned as banks, stock markets, meeting places, news outlets, and more.

      Nightlife:

      Students looking for some tasty food on a budget should check out:

      • The Lights of Liberty Show uses modern technology to tell the story of the American Revolution. As you stroll through Independence National Historic Park, you’ll see 50-foot projections of hand-painted images on the actual buildings where these events took place, accompanied by powerful music performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra with amazing effects by Skywalker Sound.
      • Pat’s King of Steaks at the end of the Italian Market on E. Passyunk Ave. is said to be the origin of the famous Philly Cheese Steak. Don’t leave the City of Brotherly Love without having at least one.
      • Django Restaurant on S. 4th St. has an eclectic menu that is always changing. You’ll definitely need reservations to get into this popular spot.
      • How many ways can you eat crepes? You’ll find out at Beau Monde on S. 6th St. Delicious crepes for meals or dessert (or both) at very reasonable prices.
      • Get dressed up for dinner at La Collina on Ashland Ave. in nearby Bala Cynwyd. Classic Italian food, live music, and dancing are all on offer.

      Sports:

      Philadelphia proudly hosts many professional teams: The Philadelphia 76ers (NBA basketball), Eagles (NFL football), Flyers (NHL hockey), KiXX (indoor soccer), Phantoms (AHL hockey), Phillies (NL baseball), and Soul (Arena Football League). The University of Pennsylvania has many men’s and women’s teams, as well. Philadelphia and its environs boast a wide array of warm- and cold-weather sports both indoors and out.

      Transportation:

      SEPTA operates subways, busses, and train routes in and around the city of Philadelphia. Downtown, the Old City area provides excellent parking facilities as well as free metered parking on certain days and times.
